Probably the single most famous aspect to AMARC in recent years has been the Mutual Arms Limitation Treaty effect of reducing the B-52 bomber force. Over 100 B-52s reside here of a grounded fleet that at one stage was over 400 in number. Using a 130 ton knife, the fleet is being literally cut up. The aircraft are chopped in three or four places, left in the field for a month then broken up. The wait is to allow the Russians to do their photo reconnaissance of the base and confirm the aircraft's demise.
